The Penny Test

The easiest way to find out if you need new tires is to check the tire tread. Insert a penny into the grooves of the tire tread with President Abraham Lincoln’s head facing down and turned towards you. If you can see the President’s head in its entirety, it means that it is time to change your tire. The recommended tire tread depth is 1.6 mm (about 0.06 inches), so if the head is visible, it means the tread depth has decreased and you should replace your tires at the earliest possible.

Alternatively, you can check for bulges, blisters, or cracks on the surface of the tire. Although these would be visible to you only towards the end span of the tire life, the penny test appears to be the easiest and most straightforward test for tires.
